Frequently Asked Questions

Now through the CrimsonMobile app for Android devices, you can attach the Crimson card reader to your cell phone or tablet through the headphone jack. Swiping cards makes it easier, faster and more accurate when taking donations on-the-go.

You can download the free CrimsonMobile app in the Google Play store. There is also an iOS version of the app for Apple devices, but the card reader will only work on Android devices.

Full-service Crimson accounts are eligible to receive two complimentary card readers. If you are not a full-service client or would like additional card readers, they can be rented for $10 a month or purchased for a 1-time fee of $100.

We would like to add card swiping functionality to the iOS version of CrimsonMobile. However, Apple’s Terms of Service for the iTunes App Store prohibit any iOS apps from collecting political donations. Any campaign taking mobile donations on an iPhone or iPad through a card-swiping service, such as Square, is in violation of the Apple TOS.

CrimsonMobile provides the same high level of security that you have when you use Crimson on your desktop computer. All CMDI products are PCI compliant across our credit card processing services. We use a 256-bit encryption, the highest level of encryption commercially available, to ensure that every transaction is secure with the maximum level of protection. Learn more about PCI Compliance.

When you use a card reader to make a donation, you have the same options and features that you see on the Crimson desktop version. You can add donations to a specific event, add a Source Code, or a Tracking Number just like a donation made through Crimson on your computer.

You can also still collect important information that’s not required by the FEC – such as email addresses and cell phone numbers – through CrimsonMobile.

There are no additional fees to process donations through CrimsonMobile beyond the normal credit card processing fees through Crimson:

    • Visa, MasterCard, and Discover: 2.9% + $0.50 per transaction (billed by Crimson)
    • Amex: $.50 per transaction (billed by Crimson); AmEx bills their merchant fees directly
